A chestnut-colored Thoroughbred with a distinctive round white star on his forehead. After consecutive victories in local horse races, trainer Kozumi Nada convinces the owner, Nakagawa, to enter him in central horse racing. "Marukko is a horse who will win the Derby." Having accumulated prize money, Marukko secures a ticket to the Japanese Derby. Riding him is veteran jockey Tomonori Tatekawa, a rider who has won numerous Group 1 races, but who carries the jinx of never having won the Japanese Derby―. "And now, the Japanese Derby, enter the main racecourse." And so, the fanfare sounds, and the gate to determine the generation's top horse opens.
