A professor at the First Higher School, he leads a joint special historical site survey team from the First Higher School and the University of Tokyo to investigate the Gwanggaeto Stele, which is believed to record ancient Japan-Korea relations.
During the survey, he is attacked by bandits and captured by Russian soldiers, but is rescued by his long-time acquaintance Uchida Ryohei.
