She is a childhood friend of Ryo Azumi and a shrine maiden at Suwa Taisha in her hometown of Suwa.
A pacifist and a Christian, she was deeply influenced by the ideas of Uchimura Kanzo. Despite being raised in a family of priests, she dreams of attending school in Tokyo. Through an arrangement made by their parents, she is able to enroll in Meiji Girls' School, a Christian institution, on the condition that she marries Azumi, who has just returned from the Chinese mainland.
