Pham Thi Lan’s mother, a Vietnamese immigrant living in Lichtenberg, a suburb of East Berlin. She along with Pham’s father were part of a group of overseas workers called “Gastarbeiter”, recruited from small and medium sized socialist countries with the promise of generous benefits. The two moved in search of a better life.
She also has four other children, all boys with the eldest of them being ten years younger than Pham.
