He is an apprentice teacher at Izumidai Elementary School. In the short story "Sakura no Hana Saku Koro", he is concerned about Sara who moved in next door. Claiming that the cherry tree that grows at his house saved his life, that he is opposed to cutting it down.
In contrast, his adult version, he uses the pseudonym "Masao Sakurai," because Sara still looks exactly the same as she did 10 years ago.
